Sargent Study

I’ve always wanted to do a master study. I started today with a speed paint of a John Singer Sargent painting. I just love this one, and while studying it, I fell in love with it even more.

Here is an old sketch I had laying around that I never finished.
I might add more detail later, if people are interested in it.

These are from the movie 3:10 to Yuma, which is a great movie and you should all check it out. They are reference studies for another project I’m taking on. I should have more original content soon.

After sketching lots of sketches from reference, I thought it was time to test myself and see what i’ve learned. I’m proud with what i’ve come up with. I still have a lot to learn. Lighting is one tuff aspect to master. The first two are sketches of zepherzeil. The last one is a phone sketch.

Here is an experiment that was revealed to me in a dream. I tried it out and it seems to work nicely. I was very lazy with it actually, but I understand how to do it. I think it would be better understood in another painting.

Here is another approach. Almost like the one above but different in it’s methods of finishing. This is also going to be finished fully. You can see some parts already cleaned up. The background is not even the focus.
